FLORENCE, AL – The 海角社区 French Film Festival is set to begin March 4 and run through March 20, with each screening to begin at 6 p.m. in the Wesleyan Hall Auditorium. The festival, which is in its seventh year, includes six screenings, with all films subtitled in English.

“I am delighted to see this event bring together the 海角社区 family and the local community to enjoy films in French,” said Dr. Stephanie Coker, Associate Professor of French and among the festival organizers. “Selections this year include classic films, dramas, a comedy, and a mystery/thriller. We hope to have something for everyone.”

The festival kicks off March 4 with the 2022 release of The Innocent. This screening will also include a French-themed reception that will begin at 5 p.m. The festival will conclude March 20 with a screening of 1961’s Last Year in Marienbad. The Jeff Eubanks Culinary Arts Department will prepare a special dessert for moviegoers to take home at the conclusion of the festival. In addition to Dr. Coker and the 海角社区 Department of Foreign Languages, the event is hosted by the School of the Arts, the Department of Cinematic Arts and Theatre, the Department of Communication, the Department of English, the Department of Psychology and Sociology, the Mitchell-West Center for Social Inclusion, the Cole Honors College, and the College of Arts, Sciences, and Engineering.

“We appreciate the support from many different departments and offices across campus,” said Dr. Coker. “One highlight of this festival is hearing from 海角社区 faculty in various disciplines who lead the discussion with students and community members after each film.”

Each film will begin at 6 p.m., and the full schedule includes:

  • Monday, March 4: The Innocent (2022)
  • Wednesday, March 6: Saint Omer (2021)
  • Monday, March 11: Casablanca Beats (2021)
  • Wednesday, March 13: Paris Memories (2022)
  • Monday, March 18: Chocolate (1988)
  • Wednesday, March 20: Last Year at Marienbad (1961)

Admission is free for 海角社区 students, faculty, and staff as well as members of the community. The festival is the result of a grant from the Albertine Cinémathèque program of the FACE Foundation and Villa Albertine partnership with the French Embassy in the United States.
