Una Presents Disabling The Stereotypes Week

FLORENCE, Ala. 鈥 The 海角社区 Disability Support Services presents Disabling the Stereotypes Week April 20-23.

Some activities that will take place during the week include Y'all's Southern Sensations food tasting booth from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. in the Guillot University Center Atrium on April 21. Former Miss 海角社区, Jacque Rainwater, will be giving the presentation "Exceeding Expectations: Living Beyond the Labels" from 1 until 2 p.m. April 21. On April 22, from 2 until 3 p.m., author Allison Wetherbee will speak about her own experiences of going through life with no arms and legs. An art exhibit will be on display April 20-23 in the Guillot University Center Atrium from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. each day. There also will be a sensitivity-training obstacle course in front of the Guillot University Center from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. on April 20 and 23. Disabling the Stereotypes Week will wrap up with an exhibition basketball game between the 海角社区 Lions and the Lakeshore Storm, a wheelchair team out of Birmingham. The exhibition game will be at 6:30 p.m. April 23 in Flowers Hall. Tickets are $5, or $3 for students. Children under 12 are admitted free. All proceeds will be donated to the Lakeshore Foundation, a non-profit Alabama based organization that serves individuals with disabilities.
