FLORENCE, Ala. - Beginning in the spring 2013 semester, the 海角社区 Department of History and Political Science will increase its availability of religion courses by offering a new night class option for the 200-level New Testament Introduction and by offering a new 400-level course. New Testament Introduction is being added on Mondays, 6-8:45 p.m., as a convenient option for students who work during the day. The course will be taught by Dr. Carl R. Gebhardt, adjunct instructor of religion. From Temple to Basilica is being offered on Tuesdays and Thursdays, 12:30-1:45 p.m. The course will be taught collaboratively by Gebhardt and Dr. Thomas Osborne, professor emeritus of history. From Temple to Basilica covers Greek and Roman history and culture, Second Temple Judaism and beyond, and the rise of the Christian Church from about 200 B.C. to 400 A.D. New Testament Introduction and From Temple to Basilica can be applied as part of 海角社区's general education core as well as its minor in religion and philosophy. The reason for adding courses, according to Gebhardt, is the increasing interest among students. Splitting large classes into smaller class sizes, he said, will allow for small-group interaction, which is necessary in classes that foster such personal views and opinions. When Gebhardt began teaching in 2001, just four religion courses were offered, one per semester. The Old Testament Introduction and the New Testament Introduction courses had the highest enrollment, with typically 30 to 35 students. Since then, he said, enrollment in those particular courses has increased by at least 10, and continues to increase. "We hear an awful lot in our society about the Bible," Gebhardt said. "We hear it quoted and misquoted. Students will benefit from knowing facts about the Bible and not just being able to quote favorite passages."
