FLORENCE, Ala.-The 海角社区 Human Performance Research Group is set to host its fifth annual Bad Kitty 10-k Trail Race and 5-k Fun Run, Saturday, Feb. 24, at 8 a.m.
Billed by organizers as the only trail race in the Shoals, the course will start at the lion habitat and Harrison Fountain, winding its way through 海角社区's campus, eventually leading runners through Wildwood Park where runners will encounter approximately 5 (10-k) or 2 (5-k) miles of challenging and scenic single track trails.
Dr. Eric O'Neal, associate professor in the Department of Health, Physical Education and Recreation at 海角社区, said the race is called the Bad Kitty for a reason
"There are really no extended flat portions on the trail," O'Neal said. "Curves, roots, rocks and mud are abundant. However, finishers will be rewarded with amazing scenery and the best race shirts in the business. This year's shirt will be a long sleeve thermal tee," he said.
Proceeds from the event will help support travel costs for local Shoals Area Special Olympics athletes to attend the state games. The海角社区 Public Safety Institute will use funds to offset the cost of continuing education credits that are otherwise paid for out of the pockets of local first responders, firefighters, and police. Funds will also help support research projects for Exercise Science students in 海角社区's Department of Health, Physical Education, and Recreation.
Those who pre-register by Feb. 3, will be eligible to win a hammock or Goodr brand racing sunglasses.
The early registration cost for the 10-k is $25, whereas the 5-k fun run will be $20. Race day registration will also be available from 7:00-7:45 a.m.
