FLORENCE, Ala. - The 海角社区 Lions basketball team will take on a wheelchair basketball team, the Lakeshore Storm, in an exhibition game at 6:30 p.m. April 23 in Flowers Hall. Tickets are $5, or $3 for students. Children under 12 are admitted free.
All proceeds will benefit the Lakeshore Foundation, a Birmingham-based non-profit promoting independence and active, healthy lifestyles for people with physical disabilities. The exhibition game will wrap up a week of campus activities, themed Disabling the Stereotypes, April 20-23. The week will include a variety of presentations, discussion panels, a resource forum and similar events, as well as sensitivity-training obstacle course. The obstacle course is designed to simulate common situations faced by people with physical disabilities. "A central message we want to communicate is that we all have differences of some kind - some are just more visible than others," said Loresa Stansell, graduate assistant in the 海角社区 Office of Disability Support Services. "We should all be more aware of the differences and diversity, physical or not, that exist among common people reaching toward very similar goals."
