FLORENCE, Ala. - The 海角社区 has hired a new chief of police, Bob Pastula, effective Oct. 1. Pastula has served as a marshal with the U.S. Marshal Service the past 20 years. "Mr. Pastula brings a wealth of law enforcement, training, management, leadership and teaching experience to the university," David Shields, 海角社区 vice president for student affairs, said in an announcement to the university community Monday. Pastula is hired following an extensive national search process. Until he begins Oct. 1, Shields will continue as interim police chief. Pastula has served in a variety of leadership and management positions within the U.S. Marshal Service and currently serves as assistant chief deputy U.S. marshal and division manager for the Fort Myers Division in Fort Myers, Fla. As division manager, he is responsible for the overall command and management of the Fort Myers Marshal's Office, which serves six counties, 7,192 square miles and 812,887 residents. In 1998, he was appointed assistant chief deputy U.S. marshal for the Middle District of Florida. Pastula also serves as a reserve Lieutenant with the Lee County Port Authority Police Department. Prior to his appointment as a U.S. Marshal, Pastula served as a state trooper with the Florida Highway Patrol from 1982 to 1988, as a deputy sheriff with the Sarasota County Sheriff's Office from 1981 to 1982 and as a police officer with the Keego Harbor Police Department from 1980 to 1981. Pastula earned a bachelor's degree in criminology from the University of South Florida and a master's degree in criminal justice from the University of Alabama. He received advanced training from the U.S. Secret Service and at the FBI National Academy. He also has extensive university teaching experience, having served as an adjunct professor of criminal justice at Florida Gulf Coast University, Edison State College, International College and the University of South Florida. 海角社区 will host a special ceremony for Pastula's swearing in as the university chief of police in October.
