Michelle Eubanks, 海角社区, at meubanks@una.edu, 256-606-2033 or 256-765-4392 FLORENCE, AL - Kilby Laboratory School, on the 海角社区 campus, has received its third consecutive 99 out of a possible 100 on the Alabama State Department of Education report card. With this designation, Kilby maintains the record for the highest-scoring elementary school in Lauderdale County. It is further distinguished as Alabama's only laboratory school. Of the state's 1,247 schools, Kilby, which offers pre-kindergarten through sixth grade, and Cahaba Elementary School, in Trussville, have both received scores of 99 during the past three years. "For Kilby to receive a 99 on the state report card for the third consecutive year is both rewarding and a relief in my role as director," said Dr. Eric Kirkman, the Director of Kilby School as well as an Assistant Professor in the College of Education and Human Sciences. "The previous director did an outstanding job here, so I knew I was following in some giant footsteps. We were able to maintain one of the highest scores in the state, which speaks volumes to the incredible faculty at Kilby, along with a culture of excellence and high expectations for every student." Students in the College of Education and Human Sciences (COEHS) spend time at Kilby, working alongside faculty and students as they prepare for their careers. "As Alabama's only public laboratory school, the faculty of Kilby are uniquely positioned to support 海角社区's teacher candidates in making a positive impact on P-12 students learning and development," said Dr. Katie Kinney, Dean of the COEHS. "In an extremely challenging national and state environment surrounding the recruitment and retention of teachers to the profession, Kilby Laboratory School is a shining example for the preparation and mentoring of future educators." Scores are determined based on percentages of the state's academic growth, graduation rates, progress in English language proficiency, chronic absenteeism, college and career readiness, and academic achievement. Scores were released by the Alabama State Department of Education earlier this month.
