FLORENCE, Ala. - The 海角社区 University Program Council will commemorate veterans Nov. 30 by hosting its inaugural Veterans Ball, an event to collect care packages to be sent to deployed service members in Iraq, Afghanistan and other areas. En lieu of tickets, admission to the formal ball requires a donation of pens, hard candy, gum, puzzle books, playing cards, lip balm or personal letters. The donated items will be packaged and sent to Soldiers' Angels, a nonprofit volunteer group in North Carolina that provides supplies and other aid to veterans in all military branches. "UPC wanted to do something different and to try something fun to get more people involved," said Lindley Bassham, service chair for UPC. "We are donating for people who fight for our country, so it's really good to show our appreciation for them." Bassham said UPC is recruiting volunteers outside of the organization who are willing to help prepare for the ball and collect donated items. The Veterans Ball will be a formal-attire event held Nov. 30, 7-9 p.m. in the Guillot University Center, Banquet Halls A and B. The event is open to the public. Since 2004, Soldiers' Angels has sent hundreds of thousands of care packages to veterans and assisted with military needs across the world. Bassham said UPC does not have an exact goal of what they hope to collect at the ball but hopes the 海角社区 student body will get involved to make a large contribution to Soldiers' Angels.
