FLORENCE, Ala. - Members of the Mathematics Department at the 海角社区 are set to participate in the Preparation for Industrial Careers in Mathematics (PIC) program, with assistant professors of mathematics Drs. Jillian Stupiansky and Lee Raney, who were chosen for the highly selective program.

The program, which is co-sponsored by the National Science Foundation (NSF), the Mathematical Association of America (MAA) and the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM, prepares math students for industrial careers, while working on real world problems arising from business, industry and government.

PIC Math participants enroll in a one-semester, credit-bearing course focused on solving industrial problems, which are both realistic and suitable for undergraduate students in mathematics. Participating students from colleges across the country form a research team, submit a video presentation and are scored by a panel of judges. The program culminates in the PIC Math Conference where students assemble to present their results.

As part of the research grant, Stupiansky and Raney will travel to Utah for training in the PIC Math summer faculty-training workshop, May 27-30, 2015, at Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah. The math department's participation in this and similar programs supports several ongoing initiatives in 海角社区's College of Arts and Sciences to support industry partners in the Shoals Region.
