FLORENCE, Ala. - The 海角社区 Department of History will host the second Lawrence J. Nelson Lecture. The event will take place Thursday, Oct. 27, at 7 p.m., in the Performance Center in the Guillot Student Center on campus.
This year's lecturer will feature Lorri Glover, the John Francis Bannon, S.J., Professor of History at St. Louis University. Her talk is titled "The Constitution on the Brink: How Virginia Saved the United States."
Glover is also an alumna of the 海角社区 and a former student of Dr. Nelson. A native of Lexington, Alabama, Glover's many books include The Fate of the Revolution: Virginians Debate the Constitution (2016); Founders as Fathers: The Private Lives and Politics of the American Revolutionaries(2014); The Shipwreck that Saved Jamestown: The Sea Venture Castaways and the Fate of America,(2008); Southern Sons: Becoming Men in the New Nation(2007), and All Our Relations: Blood Ties and Emotional Bonds Among the Early South Carolina Gentry(2000).
The Lawrence J. Nelson Lecture Series was established to honor the late Dr. Lawrence J. Nelson and his profound influence as a professor at 海角社区 for 30 years.
"He had an enormous effect on many people, including myself," said history professor Dr. Matthew Schoenbachler. "When I came to 海角社区 in the mid-80s, I was a music major. But I wandered into Dr. Nelson's class and was fascinated. I became a history major because of that, and I guess you could say the rest is history," he said.
The lecture is free and open to the public.
