By Elise Cofield,Student Writer FLORENCE, Ala. - Ten students from the Math and Computer Science Undergraduate Research Team at the 海角社区 were recently notified that their research projects have been accepted for presentation at the 2013 National Conference on Undergraduate Research (NCUR). The conference will take place April 11-13 at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse in La Crosse, Wis. The students' projects were chosen from more than 3,500 submissions, according to Dr. Cynthia Stenger, interim chair of the 海角社区 Department of Mathematics. The selection was based on their projects' unique contribution to their particular field of study. Students will present their work to peers, faculty and staff from over 300 research universities, comprehensive universities and private liberal arts colleges from around the world. Stenger said this will be the first year 海角社区 has been represented at the premier undergraduate research conference. "This experience should be invaluable to our undergraduates," Stenger said. "They will represent (海角社区) well and they will have the opportunity to meet like-minded bright, motivated and talented students." For the duration of their research, the students received guidance from faculty mentors Dr. Shilpa Dasgupta, Dr. James Jerkins, Dr. Cynthia Stenger and Dr. Jessica Stovall. The following students were selected to present their research: "Interval 3 Graph Impropriety" Josh Reinoehl, of Glendora, Calif. "Model Rocket Flight as a Pedagogical Tool for Teaching Projectile Motion" Atticus Wright, of Loretta, Tenn. Ryan Paine, of Florence Elly Couch, of Florence "Using a Computer Simulation as a Teaching Tool in a Calculus Classroom" Patrick Lindsay, of Guntersville Baillie Haddock, of Waterloo Ben Moore, of Loretto, Tenn. "An Investigation of New Algorithmic Approaches to Analyze Weather Data" Lacey Richards, of Madison Arin Graham, of Trinity Amy Brown, of Huntsville Stenger said the Mathematics and Computer Science departments are currently raising money for the trip.
